Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
The Safety Data Sheets (SDS) allows the transmission of information about mixtures and substances security to all the supply chain. They provide a source of information on the hazards for health and environment and on the safety precautions.
The drafting and delivery of the SDS is provided by the Regulation (EC) n°1907/2006 (REACH Regulation) and modified in particular by Regulation (EU) n°453/2010 of the Commission. Original REACH requirements have later been modified in order to take due account of the Globally Harmonised System of classification and labelling of chemicals (GHS) that apply to SDS (regulation (EU) n°1272/2008 - CLP Regulation).
The SDS is usually first drafted by the manufacturer, the importer or the exclusive representative (or a person who represents them), but REACH requirements relating to the provision of SDS applies at each step of the supply chain. The provider of a substance or a mixture fulfilling specific requirements must provide a SDS for this substance or mixture, no matter his position on the supply chain.
SDS must be freely provided at the latest by the time the substance or mixture is provided for the first time. It can be supplied on paper or electronically. In every case, the supplier is responsible for the provision of SDS in a fully effective manner.
